In the 1982 History of Henry County, Iowa, p. 210, a Mrs. Roy Black submitted two biographies about the Graves, Crawford and Black Family. While Hiram is not mentioned in these articles, perhaps there is a clue that might help you.

"Enoch Graves, my great grandfather was born in 1805 in Pennsylvania. In 1827 he moved to Ohio, where in 1829 he married Mary Elizabeth Spencer. The Enoch Graves family remained in Ohio until 1845, at which time, they moved to Wayne Township, Henry County, Iowa. Iowa was still a territory having first been opened to white settlers in 1832. Part of the trip from Ohio to Iowa was made by boat, and the remainder by wagon.

At one time Enoch served as Constable when Iowa was still a territory.

My great grandparents had twelve children. (Note: Names are not listed in this biography). Eight were born before they came to Iowa. Their daughter, Margaret Jane was born in 1839 and she married John A. Crawford."

I have no connection to these families.
