Mr. Jesse Mathews died at this home in Canaan township, Tuesday morning, May 7th, age 87 years, 3 months and 14 days.
The funeral was conducted by the family; Rev. Thomas Pool of Mt. Pleasant the officiating clergyman, being a cousin by marriage. The pall bearers being grandsons and the music was furnished by nieces and nephews.
The remains were laid away in the family lot at Trinity Cemetery, Wednesday, afternoon by the side of his wife who long ago preceded him.
Mr. Mathews was born in Wayne County, New York, Jan. 23 1831, and moved with his father to Indiana in 1833; to Illinois in 1835 and to Iowa in 1837, settling in Lee County, but soon removed to Lowell in Henry County where the father of the deceased built the first house in that town. Mr. Mathews was married to Caroline Patterson at her home near Burlington, Iowa, April 29, 1856. To this union seven children were born. Six of the seven survive. The second son, Wilford, dying in infancy. The wife died Dec. 31,1877. The surviving children are Adolph Mathews, Mt. Union; E.J. Mathews, Mt Union; J.A. Mathews, Hedrick, Iowa; Mrs. Ella Linch, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Fay Crocker, Mt. Union, Iowa; Mrs. Effa Chandler, Mt. Union, Iowa.
The deceased tenderly cared for and cheered in his declining years, by Mrs. Chandler. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren. Three grandsons are now in the service of Uncle Sam, only one being permitted to be present, one having sailed for France, and one is stationed at Camp Cody, N.M.; and six great-grandchildren who are left to mourn a dearly beloved grandfather.
