Lorin Mathews
Lorin Woodrow Mathews"Woodey" Mathews, 88, of Burlington, died Wednesday, Aug 29, 2001, at Morning Sun Care Center in Morning Sun.
Born Nov. 12, 1912, in Danville, he was the son of Howard Alvin and Emma Albertina Gugeler Mathews. Mr. Mathews was a 1930 graduate of Danville High School and 1936 graduate of the University of Iowa, as a economis major. He taught high school for two years, worked as an accountant in Chicago until 1947, and then returned to Iowa and taught high school for seven years, three in Maquoketa. He worked in Arizona in 1952, as a research assistant, taught in business college in Tucson and was a radio talk show host in Arizona for three years. In 1963, he moved to Des Moines and worked as an auditor for Holiday Corporation until his retirement in 1975.
He was a member of Order of Artus, Friends of the Burlington Public Library, and Des Moines County Historical Society and a life member of Pi Kappa Alpha. He enjoyed sharing his life stories with children in local schools.
Survivors include four nephews, including Donald Kellar of Burlington; one niece; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one niece.
There will be no visitation.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Mathews will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Chapman and Joel Behne officiating. Burial will be in Jaggar Cemetery in Danville at a later date.
Memorials have been established for Danville Congregational Church and Jaggar Cemetery Association.
