Four brothers have also outlived him; Edward of Lincoln, Nebr., Jesse of Canaan township this county, David of Danville, Ia., Bradley of Des Moines County, Ia., and also one sister, Mrs. Mary Robertson of Canaan township, this county.
Soon after marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Mathews settled on a farm in Canaan township, Henry County, Ia., where the children were born and reared and where the family resided until Jan. 1903, when owing to the frailties of Mr. Mathews he and his wife moved to Mt. Pleasant, where they have resided until his death
Mr. Mathews was converted twenty years ago and united with the Trinity Church on the Mt. Union Charge. Upon coming to this city he transferred his membership to the First Methodist Church in this city.

He was quiet and obtrusive and a hard worker all his life and even in the later years he could never be quite so well contented as when he had a task on hand. Honest and reliable men came to depend upon him knowing he would not fail them.
