Helen Nicholson, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of the Mt. Union area, died Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Park Place Long Term Care Unit. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 A.M. at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Shaffer of the Mt. Union United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Meals on Wheels Program and the Henry County Cancer Fund.

Helen Clair Nicholson was born September 19, 1916 in Winfield, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore Elmer and Ada Louis Myers Schenk. She grew up in Winfield and attended the schools there. On September 1, 1934 she married Stephen Edwin Nicholson in Monmouth, Illinois. He preceded her in death on September 2, 1980.

She lived most of her life in the Winfield and Mt. Union areas until moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1986. Helen was a homemaker and was of the Christian faith. She was a member of AAA, AARP, and was a member of the Women of the Moose in Burlington. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and also assisted with the Meals on Wheels Program in Mt. Pleasant.

Survivors include one son, Edwin C. Nicholson of Mt. Union, Iowa; one daughter, Carol Nicholson of Waterloo, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Her parents, husband; two sons, Jerry Stephen Nicholson and Gerald Lee Nicholson; four brothers, Gilbert, Earl, Clyde, and Johnny Schenk; and two sisters, Marie Johnson and Jessie Sandquist, preceded Helen in death.
