Bethene Kae (Nebel) Stewart died of bladder cancer at her home in Tucson, Arizona on April 30, 2005 at the age of 46. She was born July 3, 1958 in Washington, daughter of Gerald and Kathryn Nebel. She graduated from WACO High School in 1976 and attended Hesston and Goshen College. She received a Masters of Science in 1987 and a Doctorate Degree in Nutritional Sciences in 1993 from the University of Arizona.

In 1987 she married Howard Stewart of Tucson, AZ. Two sons, Clayton, age 14, and Russell, age 12, complete their family. Bethene was an Adjunct Professor, lecturer, and student advisor at the University of Arizona in the Nutrition Department until 2000. More recently, she assisted her husband in the family business, AGM Container Controls. She enjoyed bicycling, hiking, and camping with her family. She was active with her sons' Scout Troops. She was a member of the Shalom Mennonite Church of Tucson. Bethene conveyed the importance of relatives and heritage to her family through frequent visits to the Iowa farm.

Survivors include her husband and two sons of Tucson; parents of Wayland; three brothers and one sister - Grant Nebel and wife Edie of Wayland; Regina Dyck and husband Tom of Hesston, KS; Keith Nebel and wife Denies of Wayland; Brian Nebel and wife Brenda of Hesston, KS; 10 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Tucson on Thursday, May 5, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. with visitation at the church following the service. A second memorial service will be held at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, Wayland, Iowa on Sunday May 29 at 2:00 P.M.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. Contributions should be earmarked "In memory of Bethene Stewart" and mailed to the American Cancer Society; 1636 North Swan; Suite 151; Tucson, AZ 85712.
