WOMAN’S WORK

MRS. BELLE A. MANSFIELD

Mrs. Belle A. Mansfield, dean of the School of Art at DePauw University, and for a quarter of a century a member of the Faculty in that institution, died at Aurora, Ill., the 2d inst [sic:Aug 1st]. Mrs. Mansfield was known personally to almost every person in Greencastle. Besides her many friends among the townspeople and university people of that city, hundreds of former DePauw students in Indiana and elsewhere held Mrs. Mansfield in high esteem. From 1886 until 1890 she was professor of history and preceptress of woman’s hall; from 1890 to 1894, she was professor of aesthetics and preceptress; from 1894 to 1910, dean of the DePauw School of Music. Last year she resigned from the School of Music to become dean of the DePauw School of Art. Mrs. Mansfield and her husband, Prof. John M. Mansfield, came to Greencastle in 1879. Professor Mansfield was a member of the DePauw Faculty, teaching physics and biology. His health failed while here, and he went to California, where he died in 1894. Mrs. Mansfield returned here and continued a member of the Faculty. Mrs. Mansfield was a graduate of the Iowa Wesleyan University with the Class of 1866. Two years later, in 1868 [sic:1869], she was admitted to the Iowa bar, the first woman in the United States to have such distinction. About a year ago, Mrs. Mansfield traveled through Japan, and it was while abroad her health began to fail, and only her strong will kept her to her duties until the close of school. Her death cast a gloom over Greencastle, for her long residence there endeared her to all. She was a devoted member of Locust Street Church of that place.
