Funeral of Dr. McConnaughey

The funeral of Dr. D. S. McConnaughey was held from the home at two o’clock Friday, January 9, conducted by Rev. W. H. Slack, assisted by Rev. Wm. Ballard. Rev. Musselman was to have had a part in the service but could not be present. The home was filled with sympathizing friends who have known and respected Dr. McConnaughey during the years of his residence here. The service was very impressive and beautiful. After a scripture reading by Rev. Slack, Rev. Ballard offered prayer, such a prayer as only a veteran soldier may offer at the bier of his comrade in arms.

The only music was a solo by Dr. C. V. Cook, “Crossing the Bar”, which was rendered in a most impressive manner. The address of Rev. Slack on this occasion will be long remembered by the family and friends. The minister’s eloquent eulogy on the life and character of Dr. McConnaughey was well deserved and impressed all present with the importance of living a clean life, true to God and Home and country. Such a life as that which came to a close when our friend and fellow townsman passed to his reward.

At the close of the service the family and friends accompanied the body to Washington where interment was made in Woodlawn cemetery. The funeral was in charge of Undertaker Woodford of Washington.

So ends the career of one of Wayland’s best citizens, a man whose life will be recalled with affectionate remembrance. He has hear the last roll call and answering “Here” has joined his comrades of the G.A.R. on the other shore in a glorious reunion that shall have no end.
