Mary Gertrude Scott Elliott, 104, formerly of New London, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at the Great River Medical Center's Klein Unit.
Born Aug. 26, 1895, north of New London, she was the daughter of Herbert C. and Hattie Foggy Scott. She married George A. Elliott June 12, 1923, at her home in New London. He died March 30, 1977.
She attended Bethel School through eighth grade, was a 1914 graduate of New London High School and a 1919 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College.
After one summer of teachers' training at Normal School, she taught at Everett Country School at the age of 18. She drove a horse and buggy and was the only teacher for 14 students. She also taught at Sherman School and then Mount Union, where she taught English and math and served as principal. She later taught at Crawfordsville and Burlington High Schools. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and was very active in her husband's funeral business, Elliott Chapel.
Mrs. Elliott served on the Henry County Board of Education, was an 85-year member of Alpha Xi Delta, Beta Chapter, a 78-year member of Chapter E.V. of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and a member of the New London Presbyterian Church, the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 440, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Genevieve Lunning and Roberta Peterson, both of Burlington; and two sons, G.A. Elliott of New London and Scott Elliott of Lakeland, Fla.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel in New London. The family will receive friends at that time.
The funeral for Mrs. Elliott will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Henstock officiating. Burial will be in the Burge Cemetery, New London.
A memorial has been established for New London Presbyterian Church.
