JOHN L. HUGHES OF MT. PLEASANT.
Mt. Pleasant, Ia., Nov. 18 - Mr. John L. Hughes, aged eighty years, and for [sic]seven years a resident of this county died suddenly a little after noon today at his home, 410 White street. The immediate cause of his death was heart disease resulting from asthma, from which he had been suffering for a number of years. Mr. Hughes has been planning upon a trip to Seattle and shortly after eating a hearty meal sat down to talk with his wife about the details of his trip, when she suddenly noted a change in his breathing and before help could be summoned or anything done he was dead. The deceased has long been one of the most prominent citizens of this county. For a number of years he lived on a farm southwest of town, but about twenty years ago the family moved here. Mr. Hughes has always been identified with every movement that tended for civic betterment, either politically or morally, and his loss will be keenly felt by the community at large.
John L. Hughes was born at Clarksville, Green county, Pennsylvania, eighty years ago. He followed the occupation of a farmer in his native state until 1866, when he moved to this county. The family occupied a farm southwest of town until about twenty years ago, when they made their permanent residence in this city. The deceased is survived by his widow and six children: Mrs. Alice Hugh Payne, of Boone, Iowa; Miss Myrtle Hughes, of this city, and Mrs. Della Fisher of Chicago; Mr. Edward Hughes of Chicago; Mr. Thaddeaus Hughes of Seattle, Wash., and Mr. Walter Hughes.
