Gilbert Messer
Gilbert Messer, 73, of Burlington, died at 6:10 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 1997,
at Burlington Care Center.
Born Oct. 29, 1923, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Sheridan and Walcom
McMurren Messer. On Aug. 13, 1944, he married Florence Johnson in Mount
Pleasant. She died Nov. 27, 1996.
Mr. Messer was a World War II Army veteran. He worked at General Electric for
14 years and was a carpenter in Oskaloosa for seven years.
He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Burlington.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Messer of Johannesburg, South Africa, and
Dennis Messer of Burlington; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Emmett
Messer of Yarmouth, Carl Messer and Melvin Messer, both of Mount Pleasant;
and two sisters, Joanne Stahly of Lincoln, Neb., and Vera Ensz of
Bettendorf.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one
granddaughter.
Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, where the
family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Messer will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Lunning Chapel, with
the Rev. James Messer officiating. Burial with military rites by American
Legion No. 58 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2561 will be in White Oak
Cemetery in rural Rome.
A memorial has been established for First Church of the Nazarene Missions.
