Cartha Blythe
Cartha Eileen Blythe, 70, 203 E. Linder, New London, died at 5 a.m. Sunday,
April 20, 1997, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.
Born June 25, 1926, in rural New London, she was the daughter of Clarence B.
"Red" and Florence E. Willey Smith. She married Freddie Messer. He died in
1945. She then married Jack Wm. Blythe on March 9, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo.
He died April 19, 1987.
Mrs. Blythe worked at the Glove Factory in New London for many years. She was
a homemaker.
She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, the women's auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7641, Rebekah
Lodge of New London and was a bandmother at New London High School.
She attended New London High School. She loved to dance and, as a child, won
several dance contests with her father. She crocheted, sewed, canned and
gardened.
Survivors include three sons, Stanley Blythe of Unionville, Mo., and Edward
Blythe and Ike Blythe, both of Burlington; four daughters, Carolyn Sue Woods
and Barbara J. Cuggino, both of Mount Pleasant, Florence L. Holmes of New
London and Joyce Patton of St. Paul, Iowa; 27 grandchildren; 26
great-grandchildren; her mother of Burlington; one brother, Lawrence "Pete"
Smith of Burlington; and one sister, Ethel Miller of Farmington.
Besides both husbands, she was preceded in death by her father, one son and
one great-grandson.
Visitation will begin after noon today at Elliott Chapel in New London, where
the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The funeral for Mrs. Blythe will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Elliott Chapel, with
Elder William Knox officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Brooks
Cemetery in New London.
A memorial has been established.
