OBITUARY

Abigail Eliza Mitchell, daughter of Ira and Jane Mitchell, was born in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, December 14th, 1830.

At about the age of eight years, she moved with her parents to northern Indiana, where for several years her playmates were Indian children.

She attended school taught by Welcome B. Walker, whom she afterward married, on January 31, 1850. They lived for several years at Gilead, Miami county, Indiana where two sons, Everett A. now of Moulton, Iowa and Ira M. of Richland, Iowa were born on Dec. 14th, the former in 1850 and the latter three years later, both of whom survive her. In November 1856, in company with husband and family, she came to the new state of Iowa, settling in the town of Salem in Henry County to which her parents had preceded her several years. Here was added to the family a daughter, Ella J. on May 8th 1858, who passed to the beyond May 19th, 1895, leaving a son Earl, whom Grandma raised as her own child, and with eleven other grandchildren are still living.

Three brothers, Ira R. of Los Angeles, Cal., John E. of Keokuk, Iowa and Frank M. of Minneapolis and a sister, Elizabeth M. Hess of Seattle, Washington, also survive her, all of whom have reached a ripe old age.

Grandma Walker, early in life united with the Methodist church, and lived a consistent member until her death on February 14th, 1922, at the unusual age of ninety-one years and two months. --- Richland Clarion.
