Obituary of Christian Kauffman

Another landmark has been removed when Christian Kauffman of Wayland died last Saturday morning after more than six months of indescribable suffering. The malady of which he suffered was that of cancer which became very acute after an operation on it last spring and which caused him much pain ever since. All that could be done was done to alleviate his suffering, but release only came when last Saturday morning, October 23, the angel of death called him home.

Mr. Kauffman was born in France April 3, 1842 and spent his boyhood days there. About the year 1864, just during the stormy period in the States, he came to America, following his brother who had preceded him a few years before and was at that time a soldier in the Union Army. We remember him telling of the terrible scenes he witnessed from the car window as he crossed the Gettysburg battlefield a few days after that memorable struggle on his journey across the country to Ohio where he made his home at Canton for a few years, after which he came west to Iowa.

In 1869 he was united in matrimony with Elizabeth Miller of this neighborhood, who is left a widow by his death. Since that time, he has lived in the community of Wayland and has made a wide acquaintance and friendship. There were born to this union five sons and four daughters all of whom are still living in the immediate neighborhood.

He was buried on Monday October 25 in Finley Cemetery, funeral services having been held at the Wayland Mennonite Church where the family have been members. The services were conducted by Revs. Musselman, Collier, and Gerig.
