FRED S. MILLER DIES

Passed Away At Burlington Hospital Friday Morning

Fred Miller is dead. The significance of these four words has brought to this community a weight of sadness and sorrow that is not often experienced. Fred was such a good friend to us all. His greeting was always so pleasant, he was so happy at the success and pleasure of his friends, so kind and sympathetic in sorrow, so dependable and efficient in business, such a good neighbor, such a kind husband and father, it seems most unfortunate that he should be taken when he had so much to live for. We say it seems unfortunate and indeed we can see it in no other way, but we stand in meek submission to the will of a Divine Providence “who’s ways are not out ways”.

Mr. Miller was taken sick with influenza about four weeks ago. After a few days he suffered intensely with pain in his head. There seemed to be no relief for this condition and Dr. Langenwalter, the attending physician, advised that Mr. Miller be taken to a hospital as it was his opinion that a mastoid operation would be necessary. Mr. Miller was first opposed to going to a hospital but later he consented and was taken to Burlington Hospital on Tuesday, March 20th.

Here an X-Ray examination provided Dr. Langenwalter’s diagnosis correct and Dr. Pierson, a noted Burlington specialist, urged an immediate operation, which was successfully performed. For a few days following the mastoid operation Mr. Miller’s condition was considered satisfactory by the attending physicians and his family and friends had good hopes of his recovery. However, about ten days ago, the nurse and physician noted an unfavorable change and it was soon apparent that serious complications had developed in the nature of kidney and stomach trouble.

From that time on to the end, it was a losing fight. Mr. Miller grew weaker each day and the last three days his death was expected at any hour. So when the news was received Friday morning that Fred had passed away at 6:10 o’clock, it did not bring a shock, as though he had died suddenly, but it brought to each one of us the realization that the community had lost one of its best citizens.

The writer of these halting lines feels a deep personal loss in the death of Fred Miller. To us he has always been a loyal, generous friend. We are thankful for having known him intimately in life, to have felt the impress of his generous nature, and we shall always hold him in kindly remembrance.
