Roger B. Messer, 61, of Mount Pleasant died at 10:05 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Henry County Care Facility.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. David Tebbenkamp officiating. Interment, with full military honors by the VFW Post 2561 and the American Legion Post 58, will be held in Forest Home Cemetery.

Visitation began at noon today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. No family visitation at the funeral home is planned. A memorial has been established to the activity fund at Henry County Care Facility.

Mr. Messer was born Oct. 8, 1938, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Lyzell and Ruby C. McNeeley Messer.

He attended Mount Pleasant schools and worked at Mount Pleasant Lumber Company and United Building Center in Mount Pleasant from 1958 to 1985, retireing(err) due to his health.

He served in the Iowa National Guard, 224th Engineering Battalion for more than 20 years. While serving in the National Guard, he received many honors as an expert marksman in shooting competitions. He was an avid fisherman and spent much time on the Skunk River at Oakland Mills.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two brothers, Arden Messer of Fairfield and Robert Messer of Machesney, Ill.; and one sister, Ruth Ann Snavely and her husband Harvey of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marvin Messer.
