Wayland News – February 11, 1926

Mrs. Lena Egli

Lena (Rich) Egli was born near Wayland, Iowa December 18, 1858 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. A. Hochstetler, near Aurora, Oregon, January 15, 1926 aged 67 years and 28 days. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Rich.

She was united in marriage to John Egli November 20, 1879 near Wayland, Iowa. They lived in Jefferson and Henry Counties until November 1898, when they moved to Oregon, where they both resided the remaining days of their earthly lives.

She was united with the Sugar Creek Amish Mennonite Church near Wayland, Iowa at the age of fifteen years, of which faith she was a faithful member until death.

To Mr. and Mrs. Egli were born six sons and two daughters. Her companion, two sons, one son-in-law, one grandchild, father and mother, two sisters and three brothers preceded her to the better world. She leaves to mourn her departure four sons, two daughters, thirty grandchildren, three sisters and five brothers, besides many other relatives and friends.

Mother was in failing health for some time. She was under the doctor’s care since May 3, 1925, but she was able to be up and about most of the time until the last few days. Her death was due to gallstones.

A short service was held at the house, conducted by Rev. E. Z. Yoder, after which services were held at the Zion Church on January 17 at 2:00 P.M. conducted by the home ministers, Rev. A. P. Troyer and Rev. D. B. Kauffman. Text 1 Samuel 1:20:18. Latter clause “Thou Shalt be Missed Because Thy Seat Will Be Empty”.

A number of beautiful songs were sung, among them were “In that Beautiful City There is Rest Bye and Bye”, “He is Coming Back Again”, “There Will Be No Disappointments in Heaven”, “When they Ring the Golden Bells For You and Me”, “Nearer My God to Thee”, “We are Going Down the Valley One by One”, and “Under the Cypress”.

Interment was made in the Zion cemetery.
