MARGARET LEU

Margaret Mathews Leu, 73, Mount Pleasant, a former teacher in the Grinnell-Newburg schools, died Monday, Oct. 4, at home.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning, Oct. 7, at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with interment in Forest Home Cemetery there. Memorials will be designated for establishment of a hospice program in Henry County and may be addressed to Weir Funeral Home, 213 Main St., Mount Pleasant 52641.

She was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Canaan Township, Henry County, the daughter of Perry C. and Luella M. Nickolaus Mathews. She graduated from Pleasant Township High School in 1937 and received the bachelor arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant in 1942.

On Sept. 26, 1946, she was married in Fairfield to Paul W. Leu who preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1970. She taught high school in various Iowa communities early in her teaching career and later taught children with learning disabilities. She was a special education teacher for 11 years in the Grinnell-Newburg Schools beginning in the 1981-82 academic year, teaching at Bailey Park Elementary School for six years and Fairview Elementary School for five years. She retired at the conclusion of the 1991-92 school year. She was named Outstanding Educator in America for 1973-74. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority and Delta Kappa Gamma honorary education society, serving as historian of the Grinnell chapter.

She also was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant.

She is survived by two sons James M. Leu, Bolingbrook, Ill., and John R. Leu, North Bethesda, Md.; two daughters Linda Holtschlag, Decatur, Ill., and Laurie Anderson, Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren and four sisters.
