OBITUARY: (Washington Democrat; Washington, Iowa; Wednesday, February 1,1911; Page 5, Column 4:)

John R. Miller of Wayland died Sunday of tonsillitis. John was too young to die, it seems to us he was too young to died. He was only a little past fifty, maybe 51 or 52. He leaves a wife and one son. His son, Leslie, is in Tacoma, Washington, and is en route home for the funeral. He has several children. His wife was Miss Katy Eicher, a daughter of Christian Eicher. John was raised in the Dutch Settlement having been born near Trenton. His parents died when he was a young boy and like the rest of his brothers and sisters, he had to make his own way. He has a brother, Jake, dead, and these brothers are living; Peter lives at Wayland, Chris at North Wayne, Ben at Olds, Mrs. John Schlatter lives south of Wayland, and Mrs. Isaac Bates somewhere near Trenton. It seems to us there is another sister, but we do not recall her. John worked by the month for many years and was a crackerjack worker. He threshed with Eli Neiswanger, and "Little Joe" Rich for years where he likewise excelled. He kept a hotel at Wayland for years. Of late he has not been in any business. John had many good traits, and we are grieved to learn of his death. His funeral is not set as this is written as his son is on his way home as stated before

John and Katie raised two of their nieces. When Peter Miller's first wife, Anna Eicher Miller, died, John and Katie (Anna's sister, Peter's brother) assumed guardianship of Bertha Miller. When Jacob Miller's first wife, Margaret Eicher Miller, died, John and Katie also raised their daughter, Addie (again, a brother of John's and sister of Katie's).
