Perl E. Messer

Perl E. Messer, 80, of Wayland died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Parkview Home in Wayland.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Cottonwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon at 9 p.m. today at Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland, with a Masonic service to be held at 7 p.m. Family will greet friends after the Masonic service. Memorials may be made to Cottonwood Cemetery or Wayland Rescue Unit.

Mr. Messer was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Glasgow, the son of Arthur H. and Elsie McPheron Messer. He married Betty Brewster March 4, 1942.

Mr. Messer farmed in Henry, Jefferson and Washington counties. He was a longtime Funk's G corn dealer. After retiring from farming, he and his wife moved to Wayland where he worked for Brooks Meat Plant, and Farmers Merchants Telephone. He served on the Coppock City Council.

He was a member of Cottomwood United Methodist Church, where he served on church boards. He was past president of Cotton Cemetery Association, a member of Adoniram Lodge 120 of Wayland, past master of Richland Lodge, an active member of Scottish Rights and Kaaba Shrine, a 50-year member of Masons and Order of Eastern Starm charter member of Richland Lions, and a member and past president of Wayland Lions Club. For many years, he played on the men's softball league and was active with organizations for young boys. He served as a 4-H leader for many years, as well as a coach and umpire in local baseball legues.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Laverne, Gene and Gary Messer, all of Wayland, and Dan Messer of Washington, Iowa; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three brothers, Guy Messer of Mount Pleasant, Ernest Messer of Wayland and Harold Messer of Olds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.
