Floyd E. Sturgis

BURLINGTON - Floyd E. Sturgis, 84, of Burlington, died at 10:42 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 1994, at Burlington Medical Center.

The service was conducted at 1 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Barrie Tritle officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery southwest of Lockridge. A memorial to the American Heart Association has been established.

Sturgis was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Glasgow, the son of George and Matilda Peterson Sturgis. He graduated from Fairfield High School and Iowa Success Business College in Ottumwa. On July 31, 1931, he married Bernice Lewis in Washington, D.C. He worked for the United States Postal Service in the Postal Savings Division in Washington, D.C., for 12 years, then transferred to Washington, Iowa, where he was a rural mail carrier for 25 years. He had lived in Burlington for the past 26 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Burlington. He played in the National Guard 133rd Infantry Band from 1926 to 1929.

Surviving are a daughter, Elaine Statler of rural Burlington and three grandchildren. His wife and a brother, Alva, preceded him in death.
