J. L. Coberley, 92, of Mount Pleasant died Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Oct. 4, 1918, in Jamesport, Mo., he was the son of Christopher L. and Bertha M. Bolander Coberley. On Jan. 8, 1945, he married Betty May Miller in Yarmouth. She died Nov. 27, 1982.

Mr. Coberley worked as a mechanic for Ford Motor Co. in four locations and drove a school bus in Yarmouth beginning at 14 years old. In 1959, he and his brother, Aven, helped build the Danville Elevator. He moved to Mount Pleasant in 1960 and worked for Jake Schafer at Ford Farm Implement as shop manager for five stores. He worked briefly for Mitchell Ceco, and in 1975, he opened Coberley Sales and Service in Mount Pleasant. He worked for Bennett Ford Tractor Co. in Burlington.

He attended rural schools in Long Creek, Mediapolis and Yarmouth. He served in the Army Air Corps. during World War II and attained the rank of corporal.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant and former member of Danville Fire Department.

He enjoyed woodworking, handing out programs at the church door and playing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Randall Coberley of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, one in infancy.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Coberley will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Mike Hess officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. Burial with military rites will be at 1 p.m. in Trinity Cemetery, rural New London.

A memorial has been established for Calvary Baptist Church Youth Camp Scholarship.
