Werner Alvin Smith

MT. PLEASANT — Werner Alvin Smith, 68, of Mt. Pleasant, died at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 11, in Burlington Memorial hospital.

Born Jan. 21, 1907 in Brighton, he was the son of Arlo and Myrtle Edwards Smith. He married Alice Macyl McClure June 23, 1928 in Mt. Pleasant. He was in the produce business for 18 years before joining the Mt. Pleasant police force in 1954; from 1972-74 he served as district court bailiff in Mt. Pleasant. He was a member of First Baptist church and Masonic lodge AF&AM 8, Mt. Pleasant.

Surviving: The wife; two sons, James L., Rosemead, Calif., Gary D., Riverside, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Margaret) Phillips, Redding, Calif.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; the mother; a brother, Ralph and sister, Mrs. Alva (Arlena) Winter, both of Fairfield.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist church, Mt. Pleasant; Rev. Charles Comfort; Forest Home cemetery, Masonic services 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Weir-Cookes funeral home, Mt. Pleasant. A memorial to the First Baptist church and the cancer fund has been established.
