Earl S. Messer

Earl S. Messer, 67, 303 S. Harrison, Mt. Pleasant, died of Cancer at 6:32 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at his home.

Requiem Holy Eucharist will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant. The burial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, in Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation began at noon today, Tuesday, Sept. 8, at Weir funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial has been established to Henry County Hospice.

Mr. Messer was born March 25, 1931, at Rome, Iowa, the son of Christopher and Violet V. McMillen Messer. He married Buena J. Brooks on April 14, 1947, at Burlington. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1951, and went to work in construction as a cement mason and finisher from 1948 to 1980. He worked at Medium Security Unit, Department of Corrections at Mt. Pleasant from 1978 to 1993 when he retired.

Mr. Messer was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant, Local 484 of Cement Masons Union for 27 years and Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Steven E. and David J. Messer, both of Mt. Pleasant, Keith D. Messer of Burlington and Kent L. Messer of Ft. Madison; five grandchildren; and one brother, Z. Thomas Messer of Sun City, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ed, Howard and Fred Messer; and three sisters Dora, Wanda and Martha Messer.
