Ralph Jennings

Ralph E. Jennings, 81, of rural Mount Pleasant, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, in an automobile accident west of Mount Pleasant on U.S. Highway 34.

Born Dec. 14, 1921, in Lowell, he was the son of Edward H. and Bessie Black Jennings. On Feb. 16, 1946, he married Patricia Delores O'Hare. She died April 19, 2000.

Mr. Jennings was for many years a partner with his brother, Melvin, in the Jennings Dairy Farm. He also farmed the home place east of Rome. He was a 1940 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.

He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, where he was assigned to Company E, 30th Infantry Division, 117th Regiment. While serving, he was a driver for General Omar Bradley and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and the European Theater. He was a member of the Rome Baptist Church, Central States Genealogical Society, American Legion Robert Tribby Post 58. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2561 and AmVets Post 44. He showed quarter horses and enjoyed hunting artifacts and reading.

Survivors include one daughter, Maycle Kindig of rural Mount Pleasant; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and one sister, Evelyn Miller of Hedrick, Mo.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, six brother and five sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Jennings will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. John Royer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery of Mount Pleasant with full military honors by the veteran's organizations of Henry County. Memorials have been established by the Rome Baptist Church and the Mount Pleasant Library Foundation.
