Messer Takes Own Life By Hanging

Coroner Jack Raymond said this morning there will be no inquest in the death of Wilbert Messer, 68, who took his own life by hanging.

His body was found this morning hanging in the apartment he occupied at 50 1/2 W, Broadway on the north side of the square.

His brother, Garfield Messer, 202 W. Washington, Fairfield, went to the apartment to call on him about 8:30 this morning and discovered the body. Officers said he used a piece of sash cord, tied it over the top of a door opening and stepped from a chair. They estimate he committed suicide yesterday afternoon or early Sunday evening.

The body was taken to Weir funeral home where last rites are pending.

Wilbert Messer was born Sept. 28, 1890, in Henry county, the son of John and Cornelia Holliwell Messer. He never married and lived in Mt. Pleasant until he moved to Fairfield Dec. 1, 1957.

He is survived by his brother, who lives in Fairfield and a sister, Mrs. Fred Myers of Mt. Pleasant.

The investigation at the apartment was conducted by the coroner and the county sheriff.
