J. Irene Messer, 94, formerly of rural Mount Pleasant, died at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in
Mount Pleasant.

Born Aug. 3, 1908, in the White Oak community, she was the daughter of James William and Emma Olive Nelson Messer.

Miss Messer was a longtime farmer.

She received her education from the former White Oak School. She also was a longtime caregiver.

Miss Messer stayed with friends and relatives during their illnesses and with families when a death occurred. She was a member of the former White Oak Missionary Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. When the church closed, she transferred her membership to Trenton Missionary Church.

Survivors include five nephews, Dean Messer, James Messer and Donald Messer, all of Mount Pleasant, Marvin Messer of Burlington and Delmar Messer of Des Moines; six nieces, Lola Swan of Mount Pleasant, Marla Conner of Winfield, Merna Royer and Marilyn Rheinschmidt of Burlington, Wanda Bair of Des Moines and Marydel Fleagle of Mesa, Ariz., as well as great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, five sisters and one niece.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Miss Messer will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Weir Funeral Home, with the Rev. Roy Nelson officiating. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the White Oak Cemetery Association.
