Freddie Miller Killed in Action
Local Man Was Serving In Pacific

Freddie C. Miller, 23, seaman first class, has been killed in action in the Pacific theater, a message received by his mother, Mrs. Violet Miller, stated.

No details were given concerning the battle in which his ship might have taken part.

He entered the service in July, 1942, and was overseas in thirty days after that. He had been in numerous Pacific engagements. He was home 15 months ago and visited his wife, formerly Cartha Smith of New London, and their baby son, Freddie, who is now two years old.

Others surviving include a brother, Charles Edward Messer, in Alaska, a brother Zion Thomas Messer, in the navy and two brothers at home, Earl and Howard. His father, Chris Messer, three sisters, his first wife and baby preceded him in death.

The brothers were serving on ships in the same fleet in the Pacific and he had written his mother on Nov. 9 that he could see "Tommy's" ship. This was the last letter Mrs. Miller received from him.

She resides here on South Locust street and is employed at the Iowa Ordnance plant.

Note: Freddie is buried in White Oak cemetery
Note: I don’t know why the newspaper has him as Freddie Miller, he was the oldest child of Christopher Messer and Violet Victoria McMillen, however Violet married 2nd to Harold Miller
