Walter Junior Ferguson

Walter Junior Ferguson, 77, of Mt. Pleasant, died at 1:05 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Mapleleaf Healthcare Center.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, at Weir Funeral home with the Rev. Guy Sammons of the Rome Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in White Oak Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m., Friday Dec. 28 at the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established to the Henry County Ambulance Service.

Mr. Ferguson was born on Dec. 31, 1923, in LaHarpe, Ill., the son of William Walter and Lena Hood Ferguson. He attended school in LaHarpe. He married Esta Mae Sammons on June 4, 1956, in Kahoka, Mo. He farmed in Illinois and then west of Mt. Pleasant. In the late 1960s in Rome, he formed the Ferguson and Sons Tree Service. He operated the company until his retirement in 1985 due to his failing sight. He was a former member of the Eagles Lodge in Fairfield. He loved to go hunting and fishing.

Survivors are his wife; five sons, Everett and his wife Susie Ferguson, Davenport, Joey and his wife Debra Ferguson, Wever, Larry and his wife Colleen Ferguson, Dallas, Ga., Sonny Ferguson, Mt. Pleasant, and Rusty and his wife Sheryl Ferguson, Stillwater, Minn.; three daughters, April and her husband Kevin Perron, Mt. Pleasant, Judy and her husband Bruce McGriff, Naperville, Ill, and Linda Dowdy, Salt Lake City, Utah; a brother, LeRoy Ferguson of Burlington; two sisters, Ruth and her husband Kenneth Duncan, Stronghurst, Ill., and Sandra and her husband Raymond Wickham, New Paris, Ind.; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Stephen F. Ferguson; a grandson; five brothers, Henry, Gerald, Max, Charles and Leon Ferguson; and a sister, Mary Alice Stewart.
