Monday Evening, 28 February 1960Mrs. Lula Bates Taken by Death
Mrs. Lula Bates, 80, died at memorial hospital about noon Sunday after an illness of the past two weeks.
The daughter of James M. and Elizabeth Musgrove Mitts, she was born April 18, 1870, in Henry county, where she had been a long time resident, living in the Richwood community northwest of Mt. Pleasant.
On Oct. 4, 1893, she was married to John Bates, who predeceased her in 1945.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. John (Iva) Lane, Mrs. Leslie (Freda M.) Scarff, and Mrs. Lily Scarff, all of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and one brother Will Mitts of Mt. Pleasant.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the United Missionary Church at Trenton, with Rev. Walter Gray, pastor of the church, officiating.
Burial will be in the Richwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the R. K. Crane Funeral Home Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9.
Those desiring may contribute to a memorial for Mrs. Bates at the United Missionary Church at Trenton.
