Francis Scott dies in crash

Francis B. Scott, 57, Mt. Pleasant, was killed instantly when a flatbed trailer came loose from a pickup truck and collided with the dairy truck in which he was riding Friday at 1 p.m. on a county blacktop road a mile north of Winfield.

Scott was thrown out of the Mt. Pleasant Gustafson Dairy truck, which it rolled over several times after colliding with the trailer. The truck rolled on him. He died of multiple injuries. Richard Moeller, 36, Mt. Pleasant, who was driving the dairy truck, suffered multiple cuts and bruises. He is in good condition at Memorial hospital.

The dairy truck was headed south and the pickup truck, a 1968 GMC driven by Dean Slater, 42, Crawfordsville, north, officers said, when the hitch between the trailer and the pickup came loose. The trailer, loaded with elevator equipment, swung into the path of the dairy truck and the two vehicles collided. The dairy truck went off the west side of the road and rolled over two or three times. The trailer ended up in the west ditch. Slater drove the pickup to the side of the road after the accident.

The dairy truck totally damaged the trailer.

The dairy truck was totally damaged. The trailer was considerably damaged. The accident was investigated by Sheriff Dick Droz, a state trooper and Winfield police.

Scott's death was the fifth traffic fatality in Henry County this year.
