John Willis Morrow

John Willis Morrow. 86, of Mt. Pleasant, died on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, at Mapleleaf Health Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.

The funeral Mass was at 1 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant with Father Nick Adam officiating. Burial was in St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Visitation began after noon on Sunday, August 12, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the family present from 5:30 p.m. and a Christian vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorials have been established to the St. Alphonsus Church and the Mt. Pleasant Senior Citizen Center.

Mr. Morrow was born on Aug. 28, 1914, in Genoa, Neb., the son of Fred and Millie Gholson Morrow. At a young age he moved with his family to New London, where he grew up. In 1938, he moved to Mt. Pleasant. On May 30, 1940, he married Pauline H. Hoover in Mt. Pleasant. He served in the United States Army in World War II and worked as a stone cutter for Case Memorial in Mt. Pleasant. He later was a carpet layer for many years working for R.K. Crane and Benda-Looker Furniture, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He was a handy-man and enjoyed working with wood and carving ducks and canes. He liked to work in his yard and took pride in his yardwork.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Judy and her husband Russell Remick of Hillsboro and Joyce Welcher of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Mike and his wife Carla Morrow of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Gertrude Schantz of Gold Hill, Ore., and Ruth Peterson of Sun City, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Earl Morrow, and four sisters, Ina Combs, Mabel Welch, Vera Cornwell and Velda Blackstock.
