Gilbert I. Garretson

Gilbert I. Garretson, 47, San Diego, Calif., formerly of Mt. Pleasant, died of an apparent heart attack while driving home from work at the San Diego Tribune Monday afternoon, Jan.13, 1988. He was one of the editors for the newspaper the last 10 years.

He was born Oct. 6, 1939, in Laredo, Texas, to Gilbert I. and Ethel Van Hon Garretson Sr. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1956 and Iowa Wesleyan in 1959. He served as sports information director at Wesleyan while he was a student there. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Surviving are a brother, William, West Des Moines and cousins in the Mt. Pleasant area.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Frederick.
