Charles Garretson

Charles O. Garretson, 62, rural Salem, died 5:18 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 1989, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Iowa City.

He was born Jan. 13, 1927, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Dr. Joel H. and May A. Johnson Garretson.

He was a 1944 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a seaman, first class.

He received his bachelor's degree and his juris doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1951. He served as a major in the U.S. air Force in Viet Nam, before returning to Mt. Pleasant to practice law.

He was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant; the Phi Delta Theta fraternity; and served as county attorney for Henry County.

He was a member of the Henry County and Iowa Bar associations and the Salem American Legion Post 94. He was a past member of the Mt. Pleasant Masonic Lodge 8.

He is survived by one brother, Joel H. Garretson, rural Salem; and two sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Virginia) Woollis, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Mrs. Harlan (Josie) Bainter, rural Salem.

His parents precede him in death.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31 from St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Wayne Kamm officiating. Interment will be in the Salem East Cemetery with the flag presentation by the Salem American Legion Post 94.

Visitation will be at Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, where a memorial has been established to the Salem East Cemetery Association.
