Herbert Hoover

Herbert W. Hoover, 69, of Salem, died on Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 10, 1929, at Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Steven W. and Mary L. Swailes Hoover. On Nov. 29, 1947, he married Martha A. Nihart. He later married Ethel M. Dowling on Dec. 5, 1981, in Lomax, Ill.

Mr. Hoover attended schools in Mount Pleasant and farmed west of Mount Pleasant in the Rome area of Henry County. He also worked at the Mental Health Institute, Mount Pleasant, for 12 years and retired after 20 years from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown.

He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant and United Auto Workers local in Burlington. He raised, trained and raced greyhounds and coon dogs.

Survivors include three sons, Herbert A. Hoover of Chicago, William E. Hoover of rural Salem and Henry "Hank" Hoover of Mount Pleasant; six daughters, Stephanie Rich and Sandy D. Hoover, both of Wayland, Tanya Martin of Oakland Mills, Neva L. Hoover of Mount Pleasant, Renne Barnes of Yarmouth and Sonya Libe of Washington; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Perry Hoover of Phoenix and Robert Hoover of Mount Pleasant; and two sisters, Mary Lou Prottsman of Mount Pleasant and Ida Barrons of New London. He was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be no visitation. The body of Mr. Hoover has been cremated.

The graveside memorial service for Mr. Hoover will be at a later date this spring in Salem East Cemetery in Salem, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating.

A memorial has been established for Salem Fire Department First Responders.

Weir Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.
