J. Messer, 82, dies Saturday

WINFIELD --- James Lawrence Messer, 82, Crawfordsville, died Saturday, April 7, 1990, at the Washington county Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the United Church of Crawfordsville, with the Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Interment will take place at the North Wayne Township Cemetery, Olds.

Mr. Messer was born at Rome on Sept. 5, 1907, the son of Ira and Edna (Huddleston) Messer.

On Jan. 3, 1925, he married Pearl Viola Haifley. She died Dec. 5, 1972.

Mr. Messer was retired after farming in the Olds area many years. He was a member of the Crawfordsville Lions Club.

Survivors include a son, Charles of Winfield; three daughters, Wanda Schultz, Crawfordsville, Bernice Lee, Winfield, and Fern Howell of Columbus Junction; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph, Wapello, and Clarence of St. Wateska, Ill.; two sisters, Vera Wyker of Key Largo, Fla., and Betty Nichols, Cape Coral, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl; his parents; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carlotha Ross.

The family will receive visitors from 7-8 p.m. this evening (Monday), at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield. A memorial fund has been established for the Crawfordsville First Responders.
