Verlee (Carver) Van Amerongen

Verlee Carver Van Amerongen, 73, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mt. Pleasant.

Visitation will begin after 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Schantz officiating. Burial will be in the Lambirth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Les Feldick Ministries or Berean Bible Society. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com

Born December 27, 1935, in Henry County, IA, D. Verlee was the daughter of Earl Paxton and Opal Verlee Nihart Barr. She was a Mt. Pleasant High School graduate. On June 19, 1953, she married Donald Carver, who preceded her in death on November 22, 1985. Verlee married Clarence Cornelius Van Amerongen on April 22, 1989, at Harmony Bible Church. He survives.

Following high school, Verlee worked at Sheaffer Pen in Fort Madison, and then General Electric in Burlington. Later she was a supervisor at Emerson Electric and Motorola, both located in Mt. Pleasant.

Over the years, Verlee has attended Open Bible Church, Harmony Bible Church, and Calvary Baptist Church. Writing poetry came naturally to her, and she penned poems for many occasions. Verlee enjoyed quilting, golfing, and bowling, where she was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Bowling Association and the Mt. Pleasant Bowling Hall of Fame. Verlee liked exercising at Curves, helped at the church food tent at Midwest Old Threshers and participated in the Henry County Relay for Life.

Along with her husband Clarence, Mrs. Van Amerongen is survived by one daughter, Terri (Robert Hendricks) White of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three sons, Mark (Jocinda Hughes) Carver of Mt. Union, IA, Keith (Brenda) Carver of Salem, IA, and Randy (Sherry) Carver of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three step-sons, Richard (Karen) Van Amerongen of Burlington, IA, Robert (Peggy) Van Amerongen of West Burlington, IA, and Kenneth (Jolene) Van Amerongen of Loveland, CO; and a step-mother, Carmen Barr of Mt. Pleasant, IA. She is also survived by a brother, Virgil (Linda) Barr; a sister, Joyce (Jerry) Young; and a half-brother, Jack (Marge) Cantwell, all of Mt. Pleasant, IA; along with 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Van Amerongen was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Donald Carver.
