Agnes Ruth Tolander, 83, Olds, Iowa, died Sunday, July 27, 1986 at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
The daughter of Nels and Minnie Alma (Alter) Peterson, she was born southwest of Olds on October 7, 1902.
On July 31, 1936 she married Harold Tolander at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The couple lived on a farm northeast of Olds until retiring to Olds in 1960.
Ruth was a graduate of the Olds High School, class of 1920 and a graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College in 1924. She taught school in the Winfield and Waterloo systems from 1924-1936. She was a member of the Phi Mu sorority, a charter member of the Olds American Legion Auxiliary, T.T.T. and P.E.O., and was a member of the Swedesburg Lutheran Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher in years past.
Survivors include: her husband, Sunrise Terrace, Winfield; one son, Wayne Tolander, Beaverdale Heights, West Burlington; one step-son, William Tolander, Winfield; three step-daughters, Louise Unkrich, Swedesburg; Joan Dawson, Wallingford, Iowa; Donna Zuk, Spirit River, Alberta, Canada; one sister, Florence Sherman, Washington, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Wayne Peterson and one sister, Mamie Lynch.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, 1986, 11 a.m. from the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Matthew Martens officiating. Music was by Mrs. Robert W. Johnson, organist and William Tolander, soloist. Casket bearers: Brian Tolander, Jeff Tolander, Doug Tolander, Stan Unkrich, Matt Tolander, Stuart Tolander, Aaron Tolander, Donald Peterson.
Interment was in the Swedesburg Cemetery, Swedesburg, Iowa.
A memorial to the church has been established at the McKasson-Honts Funeral Home, Winfield, Iowa.
