Eugene Metzgar, Funeral Services Tuesday Afternoon
Died at Home Sunday Evening After Long IllnessEugene Metzgar, a long time resident of Winfield and community, passed away at his home Sunday evening.
Short funeral services were held at the home at 2 P.M. Tuesday and at the Winfield Methodist Episocpal Church at 2:30 o'clock. A quartet composed of Mrs. Walf Wilson, Miss Harriet Holden, T.T. Warren and J. H. Moorman sang " Jesus Lover of My Soul", "The Old Rugged Cross," and "In the Garden". Miss Mabel Day accompanied at the organ. The Rev. Reynolds C. Murdock spoke concerning " Continued Existence" from the text. "We know that if the earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens."- 2 Cor. 6:1
Interment was made in the Winfield Scott township Cemetery with the following palbears assisting in the service, George Schmidt, Marsh Sewell, Fred Brownfield, Will Feldman, John Payne and Dal Reynolds.OBITUARY
Eugene Metzgar was born in Louisa County, Iowa Northeast of Winfield, May 4, 1869, being one of the younger sons of Isbon and Lidia Metzgar. He grew to man hood on a farm northeast of Winfield.
He gave his heart to God and Here he gave his heart to God and united with the Spring Run Evangelical Church where he was active in all Church affairs until the time he moved to Winfield when he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episacopal church of this place.
On April 25, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Honts. To this union one son Earl, Was born. After spending about twenty five years on their farm home they moved into Winfield nineteen years ago this spring. During these years of semi retirement, Mr. Metzgar was kept busy supervising his farm and working at other agricultual activites which demanded his attention.
He had always enjoyed very good health until the last years of his life. During these months, although suffering a great deal of discomfort, he went up town daily to vist with old friends. During the last eight weeks he became unable even to do this and in spite of thorough medical examinations and treatment became confined to his bed. He suffered greatly but very patiently testifying to the nearness of God and his confidence in Him. He passed on peacefully and unafraid at eight o'clock Sunday night, May 10, 1936, having reached the age of 67 years and 6 days.
The immediate family left to mourn his departure are the wife, the son, three grandchildren, one sister (Mrs. Idella Latta of Chicago, ILL.) and three brothers (Oliver and Sam of Winfield and Calvin of Colorado). A great number of other relatives and friends and neighbors are also numbered amon those who mourn.
