BENJAMIN W. PIXLEY

Benjamin Webster Pixley, third child of Webster M. and Emma Pixley, was born Nov. 5th, 1876, at Lakeview, Mich. In 1882 they moved back to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

He enlisted in the World War June, 1917, in the 23rd Cavalry, later transferred to Field Artillery, going from Des Moines to Fort Oglethorp, Georgia, thence to Camp Presideo, California. Acting in National Coast Guard activities as far north as Seattle, Washington, after the Armistice he was sent to Norfolk, Virginia, and served till honorably discharged in 1920. At this place he met the lady, Miss Alberta Mattov, who became his wife in 1921. Two sons, Benjamin Levi, seven years of age, and William Mattox, five years of age, who with the mother survive his passing on. Two sisters, Alberta, [Mrs. Frank Clawson] of New London, Iowa; Sarah, [Mrs. J. H. Priest] of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; a half sister, Nellie, [Mrs. Joe Acton] of Washington, D. C., and relatives and many friends will remember him kindly.

The deceased had been in poor health for 28 month, and cared for at the Government hospital in Tennessee. His death was very unexpected. The remains were brought to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, where his buddies, the American Legion, took charge of the services held Friday, December 16th, 1932 from the Crane funeral parlor. Sherman Oatman, accompanied by Mrs. Winter, sang "Face to Face" and "Lead Kindly Light" and Rev. Laura Galer, pastor of the Universalist church, spoke of the significance of the Christmas wreath as an emblem of immortality. Interment was in the Pixley lot in the city cemetery, where the Legion gave the last salute and sounded taps.
