OBITUARY OF ELIJAH ANDERSON

At 3 o'clock, Saturday afternoon February 11, 1899, Elijah Anderson quietly breathed his last at his home on the Asylum avenue in this city, in the 74th year of his age. Mr. Anderson was probably as well known in Mt. Pleasant as any one of our citizens. He seemed in his usual good health until about three weeks ago, when he was taken with an attack of the prevailing epidemic, la grippe, which culminated in pneumonia, confining him to his bed about one week before his death. He was not considered dangerously ill, even by his attending physician at any time. He was thought to be much better until just a few minutes before he died. He was perfectly conscious to the end, sustained by his usual courage and faith.

Mr. Anderson was born in Hampshire county, West Virginia, December 18, 1825. He came to Henry county, Iowa, in 1855. Here he married his wife who survives him, Miss Mary E. Curtis [sic: Carter], Oct. 15, 1858. This couple have had seven children, six now living: Gertrude, the wife of Harry Harrison, Wiley, who lives at Toulon, Ill., Mrs. Lula Colclough, of this city, Mrs. Dr. Teter, of Winfield, Miss Stella and Miss Maud, who live at home.

For many years Mr. Anderson devoted his time raising fine stock, then run a meat market in this city. He was a man highly esteemed for his generous, whole-souled nature, and the intelligent interest he always displayed in public affairs. Mr. Anderson was a good friend, a genial companion, an estimable man. He was one of Henry county's oldest citizen's. All of his children were born and raised here, and here he has lived for more than forty years. He will be missed by a large circle of friends and neighbors.
