Verdon "Bill" Thomes
Verdon William "Bill" Thomes, 100, of New London died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at New London Nursing & Rehab Center in New London.

Born Feb. 15, 1908, in Middletown, he was the son of William Dwight and Estelle Mae Stucke Thomes. On Aug. 7, 1929, he married Beatrice Eloise Baker in New London. She died Aug. 16, 2000.

Mr. Thomes worked at the Glove Factory in New London and Fairfield. He and his wife operated a grocery store in Dallas City, Ill., for 20 years. He operated a Gambles Store in LaHarpe, Ill. He attended school in New London. In Dallas City he served on the school board, was a member of the Lion's Club and was active with the youth group at the Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Kay Miller of New London and Jean Rabong of West Burlington; one son, Gary Thomes of Dallas City; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Chapel in New London where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m.

The graveside funeral for Mr. Thomes will be after visitation Saturday in Burge Cemetery in New London with the Rev. Rod Cooper officiating.

A memorial has been established for New London Christian Church.
