Vera Marie Phinney
Vera Marie Phinney, 101, of New London died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center in New London.

Born April 3, 1906, in Henry County, she was the daughter of John and May Dietrick Henessee. On Nov. 10, 1928, she married Leslie Phinney in Monmouth, Ill. He died July 29, 1995.

Mrs. Phinney taught school for 22 years and also was a homemaker. She was a graduate of New London High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College.

She was a member of New London United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Daughters of the American Revolution and Lowell Get Together Club. She was a 60-year member of Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed bluegrass music, gardening, flowers, baking, playing cards and square dancing.

Survivors include one son, James Phinney of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Phinney will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel with the Rev. Dot Hasler officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Burge Cemetery in New London.

A memorial has been established.
