Elmer Mathews
Elmer Glen Mathews, 87, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Park Place in Mount Pleasant.

Born May 5, 1920, in Hereford, Colo., he was the son of Glen Adolpheous and Jessie Bell Garrels Mathews.

Mr. Mathews was a farmer. He raised sheep his whole life. He did upholstery work and was a janitor at Henry County Courthouse. He was a 1938 graduate of Mount Union High School and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Mathews was the family historian. He served on the board of directors for Northern Electric Light Co. He was a Marion Township trustee for many years and looked after his brother, Albert, as he got older.

Survivors include one sister, Velma Williams of Mount Pleasant; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel in New London.

The funeral for Mr. Mathews will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel. His body will be cremated after the service. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery, New London.

A memorial has been established for Mount Pleasant Public Library.
