Death of J. D. Scott

Many of our people were surprised last Monday morning to hear of the death of James D. Scott. His sickness .........of it until his death, which was caused by blood poisoning, was announced.

His parents came to this county among the earliest of the pioneers and settled two miles north of Mt. Pleasant where Mr. Scott died; and there Mrs. Scott lived until the great storm, which passed through here in 1883, blew down her house, after which her few remaining years were spent among her children. Her death occurred in Audubon, Iowa a few years ago.

James Dallas was the fifth, of a family of eleven children. He married Rebecca A. Gallaher, who died in 1882, leaving eight children who now mourn the loss of both father and mother. Emma Young, Salem; James in Washington, John in Audubon, Iowa, Miles and Frank, who have positions on the railroad, Belle Berry, of Salem, Mary Hollowell, near Des Moines and Daisy and Willie, who live at home.

Mr. Scott was widely known as very eccentric both in conversation and manners, but his friends were many as he was known as strictly honest and honorable. Gifted naturally with a wonderful memory, anything once heard was rarely forgotten.

In politics, he was always a Democrat, with the exception of one or two years when he voted the Greenback ticket. He was often justice of the peace, and held that office at the time of his death, having been elected to that position at the last election. Some of his children living at a distance and having been telegraphed for, his funeral will not take place until Wednesday.
