Robert Brecht
Robert Edward Brecht, 76, of New London died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Henry County Health Center.

Born July 17, 1931, in Fairfax, he was the son of Edward John and Anna Mae Spellerberg Brecht. On June 25, 1966, he married Sondra Piper in Fairfield.

Mr. Brecht was an automobile salesman and a truck driver. He drove a truck for Chittenden and Eastman in Burlington and Shelman and Sons in Winfield. He enjoyed motorcycles, playing guitar, playing accordion, sprint cars, NASCAR and Dale Earnhart. He raced and owned stock cars in his early days. He earned his pilot's license at 40.

Survivors include his wife of New London; three sons, Edward Brecht of New London, Andy Brecht of Fort Myers, Fla., and Rick Brecht of Mount Pleasant; two daughters, Debby Metrolis of Jonesboro, Ark., and Karen Pitman of Royston, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Vosdingh of Cedar Rapids; and two brothers, Jack Brecht of Atkins and Bill Brecht of Swisher.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Monday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Brecht will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Rod Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Burge Cemetery in New London.
