HELPHREY FUNERAL TODAY

Additional Facts Concerning the Unfortunate Accident Near Mt. Union

Mt. Union, May 1 (Special) The funeral of Harry Helphrey, who was accidently shot on his farm in Cannan township, southwest of Mt. Union, Tuesday evening, was held this morning at the Trinity church south of Mt. Union, and the remains were interred in the cemetery there. The funeral party left the Helphrey home at ten o'clock and the funeral services occured eleven o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. A. M Mahaffie, pastor of the Mt. Union Methodist circuit. The accident was seen by two men, neither one of whom was close enough to see it very clearly. They were John Conkey, Helphrey's hired man, and Henry Meyers; a neighbor, who ran to Helphrey after the shooting, but the injured man never spoke to or appeared to recognize either of them. Helphrey was engaged in plowing for corn, near his house, and his wife, on hearing the shot ran out to see what was the matter and went to where he was, but he was too far gone to speak to her. He had a wife and three small children, the youngest of which in only six months of age.

It was first reported that the gun which killed Helphrey had been placed against the fence, and was knocked down in turning the plow. The hired man who was following him at some distance, says he was carrying the gun between his knees, seated on the spikey plow. In turning at the end of the field the gun slipped from the resting place and the hammer struck against some part of the plow. The charge struck him near the waistband and ranged upwards through the heart. He was carrying the gun to shoot ground squirrels.
