Henry Biggs

Henry Marion Biggs, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at his home.

Born Dec. 12, 1913, in Adair County, south of Kirksville, Mo., he was the son of Marion and Sarah Darnell Biggs. On April 20, 1939, he married Mary Ellen Wallace in Hannibal, Mo. She died Aug. 28, 1991.

Mr. Biggs moved to Mount Pleasant in 1943 and opened Biggs Hatcheries. He owned and operated the business for 25 years. He was the clerk of court for Henry County for two terms, beginning in 1972.

He attended Lone Star Country School, was a graduate of Kirksville High School and attended Kirksville State Teachers College. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Memarco Sunday school class, the Methodist Sunday Morning Breakfast Club, Eastern Star and Mount Pleasant Masonic Lodge No. 8. He served two terms on the Mount Pleasant City Council and was a past president and charter member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Con Amigos Card Club, was an Old Threshers volunteer in the craft building and Methodist food tent, and a former member of Mount Pleasant Saddle Club. He raised Shetland ponies and enjoyed working in his large garden. In later years, he enjoyed woodworking and chair caning.

Survivors include four daughters, Debra Cordes and Vicki Roberts, both of Mount Pleasant, Linda Kniep of Des Moines and Karen Taylor of Columbia, Mo.; three brothers, Lester of Marshalltown, Harold of La Plata, Mo., and Wilford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Doris Gilbo of Tempe, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Biggs will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for acoustical sound improvements at First United Methodist Church.
