Wayne Halliwill
Wayne A. Halliwill, 84, of Alamo, Texas, formerly of Salem and Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at Arnold Memorial Hospital in Adrian, Minn.
Born Jan. 8, 1916, near Donnellson, he was the son of LeRoy E. and Sarah E. Mogel Halliwill. He married Harriet F. Smith on Sept. 28, 1940, in Vinton. She died Dec. 14, 1976.
Mr. Halliwill attended Donnellson High School and worked as a carpenter at the Iowa Army Ammuntion Plant in Middletown. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served in the Pacific theater in the 181st Field Artillery Battalion, in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. After the war, he was a self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker. He worked for H. Eugene Smith Construction of Mount Pleasant, and also farmed on the northwest side of Salem. In 1978, he retired and moved to Mount Pleasant. In 1988, he moved to Texas, where he spent his winters. He spent summers in Adrian, Minn.
He was a member of the American Legion Simpkin-Pidgeon Post 94 of Salem, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2561 of Mount Pleasant and a long-time member of the Moose Lodge in Mount Pleasant.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Sue Bell of Cullowhee, N.C.; one grandson; one brother, Louis Halliwill of Toddville; one sister, Loretta Statter of Donnellson; and his special friend, Marian Winter of Adrain, Minn.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Visitation will begin at noon Saturday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The memorial service for Mr. Halliwill will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Weir Funeral Home, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Inurnment will be in Forest Home Cemetery, with full military honors by Salem Legion and Mount Pleasant VFW and Legion posts.
A memorial has been established for St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant.
