Bertha Mathews

Bertha Mathews, 86, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Oct. 13, 1912, in Lowell, she was the daughter of Herbert and Martha Simmons Beyer. She married Walter Mason Mathews in 1934 in Illinois. He died Dec. 19, 1989.

Mrs. Mathews was a nurse, an outstanding educator and an associate professor with a master's in speech pathology.

She graduated from New London High School as valedictorian of her class and was a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit.

Survivors include one son, Frederic Mason Mathews of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Schael Ann Engle of Williamsburg; two grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Jaste of Wartrace, Tenn.; and one nephew.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

Visitation will begin after noon Monday in Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service for Mrs. Mathews will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Elliott Chapel in New London, with the Rev. Ray Howland officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Tipton Masonic Cemetery.

The body has been cremated according to her wishes.
